One of the most exciting and challenging adventures is that of creating a new habit. Deciding to introduce a new routine into your life can seem slightly overwhelming–even though it’s exciting. This week I introduced a new habit into my own life: Honey Lemon Water. This may not seem like a huge change in my life, but in reality, taking the time every morning to do something nice and relaxing for myself has begun to set a new tone for my day.
I’m a person who tends to rush rush rush from one thing to the next, despite my semester off from University, and setting an intention–forcing myself–to slow down and breathe first thing in the morning makes for a more peaceful day overall.
My mornings used to look something like:
- Wake up whenever (probably around 9:30 or 10:00)
- Take an exhausting, scalding shower for about 30 minutes
- Rush to put makeup on
- Sit and do nothing/go to work
….Yeah. Not very healthy or mindful or really like my personality at all. I knew that something had to change. So, one morning, I decided to try an hour of Sky Time. I woke up at 8:30, took a short, lukewarm shower, and then headed downstairs to begin my hour away from electronics. I decided to–get this–make myself breakfast. I never eat breakfast. So I made a turkey sandwich and then found myself aching for a warm drink. We didn’t have any good tea and I don’t drink caffeine so after floundering about for a bit I made myself some honey lemon water.
I made it mindfully, slowly, patiently… and that’s how I lived the rest of my day. Mindfully. Carefully. Gently. And for someone who has always struggled with an overly critical inner dialogue, it was a big change.
So then what are the real benefits of honey lemon water?
I’m glad you asked.
Other than the mindful process of making it and the benefit of an act of self-care (and these are big, big benefits), there are many health benefits of honey and lemons (and water, but that goes without saying) first thing in the morning.
- Great source of natural antioxidants
- Eases throat irritation
- Natural Antibiotic
- Local honey helps the global bee population
- Local honey aids in preventing seasonal allergies
I cannot stress enough that your honey should be LOCAL (read my blog post on why here).
- Good, natural source of Vitamin C (and thereby is good for your skin)
- Aids in digestion
- Freshens breath
- Contains antioxidants
- Helps weight loss
Not to mention that drinking warm water is relaxing and helps you stay hydrated!
Here’s how I make my honey lemon water:
Step one: Purchase fresh, (preferably local) non-GMO lemons; local honey; and a mug that you enjoy Step two: Juice one half of a lemon into your mug, removing the seeds. Step 3: Pour one tablespoon of honey into your mug. Step 4: Fill mug with warm water, mixing your all ingredients together.
